Chamomile is one of the oldest known medicinal herbs. In the folklore days, chamomile was used to cleanse and beautify the skin as it has a calming effect and makes the skin smell good. Other well known functions include calming irritation like redness, soothes sensitive skin, fights acne, reduces oiliness of skin, shrinks large pores, soothes sunburn and cools heat damaged skin, and generally relieving inflamed skin problems.

Amongst the various types, the most common are german and roman chamomile.

German chamomile (matricaria  recutita) is deep blue in colour as it contains chamazulene, and has a sweet straw smell. It is often used as an anti-inflammatory and infection fighting agent.

Roman chamomile (anthems nobilis) has a yellow-pale blue colour, and has a lighter fresh apple fragrance. It is typically used for its anti-spasmodic, anti-fungal and calming properties.
